Lumber volume
Board foot calculator
Convert lumber thickness, width, length, and quantity into board feet and cubic feet. Built for US hardwood and rough-stock estimates.
Result
Board feet = (thickness″ × width″ × length′) ÷ 12 × quantity. Confirm whether your yard prices by nominal or measured size.
How this calculation works
One board foot is a volume of 144 cubic inches — a piece 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 1 foot long. Multiply thickness (inches) by width (inches) by length (feet), divide by 12, then multiply by how many boards you need. The calculator also shows cubic feet (board feet ÷ 12).
